Bengal vs Ragdoll
Two of the most popular breeds that have garnered fame and popularity because of their unique traits, personalities, and physical appearances are Ragdolls and Bengals.
In this article, we will look at the similarities and differences between Bengal cats and Ragdoll cats so that you have a better idea of which cat fits your lifestyle and family dynamic.
History of Ragdoll Cats & Bengal Cats
The Ragdoll breed was developed in the 1960s by cat breeder Anne Baker using free-roaming cats in her neighborhood. She set out to start a breeding program and all Ragdolls are descendants of the original litter. She even set up her own agency, however, as time went on, she grew eccentric, and other breeders distanced themselves in attempts to try and maintain the integrity of the breed.
The first Bengal crossbreed, between the spotted Egyptian Mau and the Asian Leopard Cat, was created by Jean Mill in 1963. But, the hybrid was not perfected until the mid-1980s. It is the only domestic breed of cat that has rosette markings.
Description of Ragdoll Cats & Bengal Cats
The Ragdoll breed is large and heavy-boned. It has a soft, silky coat and remarkable blue eyes. Ragdolls are relaxed, calm, and easygoing cats. They are active, but not overly energetic and enjoy being petted, pampered, and carried out. They physically collapse in joy at being cherished and indulged by their human partners. This friendly cat gets along well with kids and other household pets, creating a wonderful family pet. They can even be trained to use a leash.
The Bengal is a medium to large-sized cat and is generally quite long, lean, and muscular. They can weigh up to 7 kg, and as low shedders, they are believed to be a hypoallergenic cat breed. In terms of temperament, they are energetic, smart, playful, and love being around water. Bengals can form strong bonds with their human family, becoming affectionate and loyal.
Characteristics of Ragdolls & Bengals
Ragdoll cats are known to be sweet, friendly and loving. Affectionate without being demanding, Ragdolls are often nicknamed as “lap cats” as they usually respond favorably to lots of hugs and cuddles from their owners.
Bengal has a personality that is as appealing as its appearance. Bengal is affectionate, playful, and can get along with people of all ages as well as other pets. They are full of “character” and are very responsive; almost as if they’re having conversations with their humans and will come running to their owners whenever their names are called. They also love to jump onto their owner’s lap to knead. Bengals are more of an outdoor cat. Thus, you may leash-train them and bring them out for adventures!
Grooming needs of Ragdolls & Bengals
Ragdolls have beautiful silky long coats that need to be brushed twice a week.
Bengals on the other hand do not require much grooming as they have short fur which needs combing only every fortnight.
Owners of Ragdolls and Bengals would need to clean their eyes, ears and mouth once a week. In addition, their nails should be trimmed every fortnight. To maintain their dental health, it will be a good practice to brush their teeth daily and get the Vet to check their teeth and gum yearly.
Cats hardly require a shower as they groom themselves every day unless they accidentally soiled themselves.
Diet requirements of Ragdolls & Bengals:
Cats are carnivorous animals. They require a diet that is made up of meat which is high in protein. Genetique, a cattery that sells Ragdolls and Bengals feed their cats with their nutritious home-made chicken. Their home-made chicken has no preservatives added. In fact, they add their premixed concentrated supplement which contains all the needed nutrition a cat requires such as taurine, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Iron etc.
